With an annual revenue budget of around £1.6 billion and a workforce of around 34,500 employees, Hertfordshire county council is a big business in its own right. We are responsible for providing a wide range of services to residents, businesses and visitors across the whole of the county.
Our main ambitions are to make Hertfordshire a better place to live and work and to provide the best possible services from educating children and providing services to the elderly and disabled, to managing our road network, providing libraries fit for the 21st Century, and reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

- There are nearly 10,000 teachers in Hertfordshire, teaching around 160,000 children in 530 schools every week day
- There were over 5 million visits to Hertfordshire's Libraries in 2006/07
- On an average day, Hertfordshire Adult Care Services supported 2,300 adults with a learning disability to live in their own homes
- Hertfordshire Highways maintains 5,000km of roads, pavements and associated drains as well as over 100,000 street lights, 15,000 illuminated signs and 5,000 traffic bollards

- 200,000 transactions were completed on line at hertsdirect.org, making it more convenient for our customers, reducing impact on officer time and improving efficiency
Hertfordshire County Council is looking to forge closer links with the business community to better understand what businesses need from this authority and to help us deal with opportunities and challenges such as preparing for the 2012 Olympics, demographic changes and predicted economic downturn.
